The Other Art Fair: Rosie Emerson
The work of Rosie Emerson stood out at The Other Art Fair for it’s scale and impact, that dominated that part of the show.
Her female figures are reminiscent of Golden Hollywood glamour shots, but are god-like in the detail. Created through a mixture of collage, photography, painting and drawing, the images are filled with feminine strength and a fierce sexuality.
One set of her displayed images, the ‘Legs and Drawers Series’, reminded me of the ‘Grotesque’ ornamental designs of the Italian Renaissance, with figures semi-animalistic, as if in the process of changing between species. Rosie herself related these to her time spent in Florence.
There is a fluidity to her images, which compliments their elongated form, the shapes informed by shadow or colour. Rosie’s images are striking and powerful, and you should definitely take a look at her portfolio.
